Plan B - Ticker Tape

Remember these placemats I made for Valentine's Day?

And my daughters liked them so much they wanted to use them as wall hangings instead of placemats?

Well, I guess I was so keen on the idea of having nice new placemats, I went and made another batch.

The plan was to make them "less nice" so we wouldn't be as worried about wrecking them with spaghetti stains and such.

So no embroidery this time.  And I used this cute "ticker tape" method of patchwork where you apply fusible web to the back of fabric scraps, trim them to size, press them in place ... very much a make.it.up.as.you.go.along sort of thing.

And then you secure all the bits in place with your choice of machine applique stitch.

I used this small zigzag stitch for a "Made in China" look in an effort to make them "less nice" ... I don't think it worked 'cause I actually like these ones more than the originals!

Clearly I have a thing for monograms ...

And I finished them off with ricrac and a little lace tab.

My husband is so thrilled to finally - after all these years of being married to a pink-loving quilter - have his very own pink, patchwork, monogrammed, laced & ricraced placemat.

What a lucky guy!  LOL!

J is a very lucky guy but maybe you can make him a nice manly man placemat to call his very own one day. Maybe for the fall in the new house. Manly men like fall colors. They do, really!

I swoon everytime I see your blog header then once I see your delicious fabrics, the drooling begins. Waaa!., I wish I had your stash of material! A couple of years ago I decided to make myself a quilt. At this moment it's still a lapper, lol, but it is in the works. To start,I bought a ruffled bed skirt as it had the perfect size, colour and idea (I can make that ruffle work for me, I can!) but not having a permanent place to set up the machine is a downer. Oh well.
I am truly inspired when I see what you have done and you encourage me without even knowing it. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work - and your writing. You're a hoot :)

I love them almost as much as the originals. Now, be sure to tell us how you feel when you get spaghetti sauce on these, ok?! And maybe your husband has been secretly coveting a pink, embroidered placemat for years. LOL

kristyne I love your placemats... once I finish this t shirt quilt I want to make some placemats too! Problem is they won't look as cute as yours! You are so talented to take bits of fabric and turn it into THAT! You rock! Thanks for inspiring me to keep on truckin'! Kathi

Hey, I've sprayed some of my "special" placements with Scotch Guard. It buys a bit of time before the food soaks in, and you can usually just wipe them off. Of course, you'll want to spray them BEFORE the spaghetti stains and such. :)

I love the ticker tape approach - have been wanting to try making a quilt or wall art ever since discovering it in "Sunday Morning Quilts."

You amaze me - how do you crank out so much cool stuff that isn't sloppily done??

P.S. - Tell your husband he's one lucky guy! :)

You so make me laugh! :-) They are beautiful placemats. I agree with the not want to get them dirty. But you gotta use them since you put the letters on and everything. :-) Keep up the beautiful work! K-

The maintenance guys here at work are probably wondering if there is anything "extra" in my coffee cup this morning because I was laughing so hard. Love your blog! I finally got my copy of your book - so excited. I had asked my local quilt shop to order it for me. I'm thinking this is a very popular book, because it had been on backorder and when they finally received the order, only 1 of the 3 came in. I grabbed the 1 copy as soon as I saw it. I did restrain myself from jumping up and down and squealing, though . ;-0

Love them! Did you line the placemats and if you did, how did you keep the ourter edge from getting "wrinkly" after they get washed -- ironing?
Thanks,
Cathy
