great granny sew along & giveaway

Hello and Happy Monday!

Welcome to the final installment of the Great Granny Squared Sew Along with Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and Fat Quarter Shop.  If you've been sewing along, you know the drill - I've got photos of this week's project, which is a ton of fun to make by the way - and a link to your homework PDF, as well as a copy of Lori's new book to give away to one of you. :)

The last thing you need to make for this quilt - but certainly not the least - is the Label Block

It's a whimsical change from the traditionally little label we so often associate with quilts - and it has a blank square in the middle of the block for you to customize with whatever embroidery design you like.

Lori's book has lovely label ideas and embroidery templates.  I started my stitched square with Lori's floral motif and then did a little designing of my own.

Since I don't need a quilt label at present I took another idea from Lori's book - adding a border to my block - and turned it into a zippered cushion cover.

Not surprisingly, one of my girls requested it for her room in our new house.  So what about the other girl?  Well, this block is so quick and easy that I didn't need any arm-twisting whatsoever to whip up another one ...

For those of you who don't embroider - I know you're out there ;) - try adding a little ribbon to the center square as an alternative to stitching.

(A few extra details on the back of a cushion is never a bad thing.)

For more inspiration, check out my labelling partners over at Pink Penguin and Lily's Quilts.  And remember to add your photos to the Great Granny Squared Flickr Page to be entered for the weekly prize.

Without further ado, I'd like to give away a copy of this beautiful book, which is page after page of gorgeous photography, inspiring designs and easy-to-follow patterns.  If you'd like a chance to win, leave a comment on this post (not an email) telling me if you are a labeller, a non-labeller, or - like me - a labeller with good intentions who doesn't always get around to it.

This giveaway is open to all and closes Sunday May 26th.  I'll announce the winner soon after.   Good luck to you!

I try to add a small label to my quilts but sometimes forget because it's a new thing for me to add labels.

Oh of course I label everything ;) Really!

I labelled once, must try to remember to do that. My beautiful hubby bought me some 10" squares of that Tilda fabric and I still haven't decided what to do with it.

I label all of my quilts - large and small - even the mug rugs! . . . with name and date and sometimes more. Your pillows are beautiful just as everything else I've seen on your post. Thank you for your inspiration.

I plan to learn some labeling ideas. From now on I will make an honest attempt to label !

Too often I have mailed off a quilt or garment forgetting to attach a label, great intentions. I've had to hang a large note to remind me to not forget the label next time.
The Granny Square book looks fun! Your two pillows are beautiful color way examples!

Kristyne, I LOVE your blog. Such lovely inspiration! I'm a converted labeler - it just adds that extra something.

Hi, I always label my quilts with an applique heart with hand embroidered name and date, my embroidery is rustique to say the least! I used your technique to make a label for my sewing machine cover using felt and ribbon printed with scissors, I was really pleased with it., thank you for showing us how to do it. Regards Sharon

I'm a labeller:D

I'm a 'wish I was a labeller'! I think I've only ever put a label on one quilt I made and that was a special one for my Mum.
Your cushions are lovely.

oh that pillow is adorable! You always have those little touches that take your projects to the next level and make them sparkle. I'd love to win the book but since I have never won on any of these blogs I'm not holding out hope. Thank you for sharing your talents, you are so creative!!

Oh I do so love both of your pillows.
I always want to be a labeler but never do.

I only label things that I give away.

I have to admit I'm a labler with good intentions.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDiann Cornell
I guess I'm a labeler with good intensions. Lori makes such cute labels that it makes me want to be more diligent!

I am full of good intentions! But not many labels. One of my goals is to be better about this, photographing my quilts before they leave the house, and finishing my containers of unquilted quilts! It is summer for this college prof, so there is hope on many levels here at he beginning of summer!

I'm a labeled with good intentions, who doesn't always get around to it! I love the pillows that you made, they're darling!

Your pillows are just wonderful! The extra touches you add always make the difference between beautiful and STUNNING! I am a labeler - if and when I ever finish anything!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaulaK
Gorgeous pillows!! I never used to be a labeller but now I am - I told my girlfriend it was so she couldn't re-gift - haha! But the personal touch is really lovely I think especially if you have gone to the effort of making someone something

I am a labeler - nothing elaborate, just a cotton or muslin piece hand-written in permanent marker, even for my charity quilts given to Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's Hospital Pediatric Infusion Therapy Unit (kids' chemo). I want those brave children to know someone cares.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHelen
I'm a some-time labeller. I am trying really hard to get better at it, as I can now see how quickly time flies and it's difficult to get back to those 20-year-old quilts to label them now!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKate
Yes, I label. I enjoy embroidering a message or name I gave quilt or special occasion. My granddaughter's quit has a label with her name and sweet saying. She folds her quilt so that is what is showing. Love that girl! :)
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkaren k
Wow I love the colors you choose for your projects. I do label my quilts however my other projects not so much.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJill

May 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjamee
Definitely a labeler with good intentions! I get so excited to be close to finishing that I usually forget and just plow on through to the end. :)

The pillows are gorgeous. That Pam Kitty Picnic...wow.
I always add a label if I am giving a quilt to someone. I don't always label the ones I keep. I love your pillows! Your daughters are lucky!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaren McMahon
I haven't ever labelled anything--perhaps someday I'll try!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGlyn
I am a labeler. I name my quilts and include that on the label along with my name and the date. I embroider the letters and hand sew the label to an edge on the back of the quilt.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLinda
Your work is stunning. I would so love to win a copy of Lori's book.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterIrene
Both pillows are so lovely! Thanks for the great giveaway!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDonna
Hahaha, I have got to be in group 3. Good intentions~ a friend even sent me some labels, but its one thing I just don't get around to.. maybe one day I will go back and label everything; but I'd rather just make a better effort starting now. Your pillows are adorable!
I don't label everything I make...depends what it is. I need to find labels like the one pictures that look more like a design element :-) and appealing to the eye!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa V
So far, I haven't labeled any of my quilts or other projects since I've only begun quilting in the last year. As I improve, I'll want to label my projects - which I think will be soon!
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLinda Lee
I'm a wanna be...sigh.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRachel
Another labelled with good intentions. I do label the quilts I give as gifts, but my own...
I am a labeler.....with good intentions :)
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaty
If I had cute labels like you, I would be a labeler.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLara S.
I am a non labeller - usually because all my quilts are done at the. very. last. second. !
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNaomiRuth
The more quilts I make, the more it seems like a good idea to label them. So far, labeling has been only good intentions but when the current quilt is finished, it goes to my 1st great-grandchild and it will be labeled.
May 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLinda
After seeing your beautiful log cabin label, I always make an embroidered label for my quilts. It adds that personalized touch that the receiver always loves! However, I do take forever to figure out what I'm going to put on it!!!

I am a labeler (part of my accouning background). But your pillow covers have given me a new thought direction, thank you!
