great granny sew along & giveaway

Hello and Happy Monday!

Welcome to the final installment of the Great Granny Squared Sew Along with Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and Fat Quarter Shop.  If you've been sewing along, you know the drill - I've got photos of this week's project, which is a ton of fun to make by the way - and a link to your homework PDF, as well as a copy of Lori's new book to give away to one of you. :)

The last thing you need to make for this quilt - but certainly not the least - is the Label Block

It's a whimsical change from the traditionally little label we so often associate with quilts - and it has a blank square in the middle of the block for you to customize with whatever embroidery design you like.

Lori's book has lovely label ideas and embroidery templates.  I started my stitched square with Lori's floral motif and then did a little designing of my own.

Since I don't need a quilt label at present I took another idea from Lori's book - adding a border to my block - and turned it into a zippered cushion cover.

Not surprisingly, one of my girls requested it for her room in our new house.  So what about the other girl?  Well, this block is so quick and easy that I didn't need any arm-twisting whatsoever to whip up another one ...

For those of you who don't embroider - I know you're out there ;) - try adding a little ribbon to the center square as an alternative to stitching.

(A few extra details on the back of a cushion is never a bad thing.)

For more inspiration, check out my labelling partners over at Pink Penguin and Lily's Quilts.  And remember to add your photos to the Great Granny Squared Flickr Page to be entered for the weekly prize.

Without further ado, I'd like to give away a copy of this beautiful book, which is page after page of gorgeous photography, inspiring designs and easy-to-follow patterns.  If you'd like a chance to win, leave a comment on this post (not an email) telling me if you are a labeller, a non-labeller, or - like me - a labeller with good intentions who doesn't always get around to it.

This giveaway is open to all and closes Sunday May 26th.  I'll announce the winner soon after.   Good luck to you!

I'm a labeled, when I remember, lately not so much.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnita
Definitely a labeller with good intentions but when I do label it includes a bit of embroidery.

I would love to be a labeller, but am not currently. Would love to win this book!

Not a labaler, however I ordered some labels the other day because I want to be a labeler!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHeather
I think I am a labellee!!!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaula B
What I really wish is that quilts could talk, so they could tell you their ENTIRE history. However, since that is unrealistic, a label is the next best thing. That being said of course we all know about good intentions. I would love to win the book. Thanks.

Good intentions always......reality check, not so much!!!!! Fun giveaway. LOVE your blog!!!!!

I'm a labeller with good intentions, oh how I want to become a labeler!!! Love your pillows and love Lori's book. Thank you for the chance to win one.

I don't label but perhaps I should start! Thank you for the competition, would love to own a copy of this delightful book! :)

Love the pillows! I am a labeler who needs some fresh ideas! I would adore this book!

Labeller here. I didn't for years. What I do is take a square of neutral fabric, fold it on the diagonal, press, write what I want on it and sew it into a corner when I sew the binding on. All I have to do is stitch the one edge down. Finished and good to go..

I label! ... I used to "sign" with a small label with a embroidered star hidden in some corner of my works but I have got so much inspiration with "artist-labels" like Kristyne - and now I try to label in different ways ...
:D

They are so pretty. Your stitching is so neat. I'm a good intentions labeller.

You do such a good job with you quilts. It is always inspiring. I love this pattern and would love the book. I have only labeled a few of my quilts but would like to do it all the time.

I'm new to quilting and have only made one quilt but I did label it, with a lot of help from your blog post, which I probably found on Pinterest. Then I had to read the whole of your blog archive because: a) you make me laugh, and b) you share my ocd tendencies about fabric placement and fabric hoarding! Would love to win this book as I absolutely HAVE to make more quilts! :)
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGail
I am a labeler... a must and the recipient of the quilt loves the label - which is so personal!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngie
I'm sorry to say I am a non-labeler. In fact, I do good to get them quilted and bound. My favorite part has to be piecing.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRobbin
Definitely a labeler...I'm all about making sure people know the quilt's provenance...or I'm just really vain and want to make sure people know I made it...;)
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMalerie
I always intend to label, but can never quite seem to get it done. :) Thanks for the giveaway!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBev
They are both really beautiful but, if I had to choose, it would have to be the vibrant colour one - just too cute, especially with your little square in the middle. I'm definitely a labeller - initials or name, with date, on everything! Have a lovely week, Chris x

Your cushion is lovely Kristyne. I try to be good and label all my quilts. Although I do have a bag of labels made up from my early quilts still waiting to be stitched on. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChristine M
Oh, I love your pillows!
I love the labels, but never think to add one. Maybe next time?

Thank you so much for a chance to win!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjoanie
I'm currently a non-labeler, but would like to change. :) Your pillows are lovely, thanks for sharing your pictures. They've inspired me to go dig through my scrap basket and make a pillow for myself!

I'm a labeler, and I love the pillows!!!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarca Fritzemeier
I absolutely love beautiful meaningful labels and I always thought that the label itself was what it's all about. But my 7-year old son taught me a few months ago that positioning is just as important. I stitched him a label with the text I always use to wish him a good night and sewed it in the right-bottom-corner. Wrong! He explained to me that I should have sewn it top-centre so that he could read it while drifting off to sleep. And right he is so that's where my next label will be......

Like you, I have good intentions of labeling, but very rarely do. I'd love to win the book and start Granny Squares. If not, I guess I'll have to go buy it! Your work is phenomenal.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLouise
Most definitely a labeler...i love adding this final touch to my quilts. Mostly, because once I move on to my next project it is very likely I will forget the name or finish date of my quilt. I have been quilting for 39 years, that would be a lot to remember! Love that label you show and also the sweet little touch of trim on the back.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLouise
Love your creations. I always have good intentions...to label. I even made 10 labels, that are still sitting there...I just get excited and give things away, then think "why didn't I sew a label on?"
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCindy
I'm a labeller with good intentions who doesn't always get around to it.
I cannot decide which of those pillows I like better!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDana
Ohhh, your work is so beautiful ! Just love your pictures of your projects. Always an inspiration to me.
I do try and be a labeler. Haven't been very creative with them though. This book of Lori's looks like fun.

I have good intentions and I am trying to label the quilts I inherited from my grandmother. She did not label any of hers...I want to make sure that my children remember!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim C
ah, good intentions - they do go by the way-side, don't they? I have them, but have never labeled -
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarol Leatherman
I labeled a quilt once....
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCamille
I label everything although not designer labels...sometimes just a quicky..
Would love to win your book!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnne Coleman
I am not a labeler but I might be some day! I like homemade items that are signed and dated. I also like a lot of the labeling ideas that I have seen around blogland lately.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLinda W.
My tendency is not to label but depending on the project and who the recipient is, I do label. So many of the quilts I make are made with the thought that it should be used until it dies and then I can make the recipient another. There have been a dozen or so quilts that I have made that were intended to be more gently loved and those are ones I do label.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLee
I am guilty, I don't label.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPatricia M.
I try to always label, but as you mentioned, sometimes it doesn't happen!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaren Martin
I try to label all my projects. It helps me remember what I created when. Thanks for the giveaway.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAudrey
I am a labeler! I currently use Pigma pens to handwrite them but have embroidered in the past, would love to learn some simply beautiful label ideas!
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda
I am not a labeller. I find the idea of it to be stressful! I absolutely LOVE the pillow you made with Pam Kitty fabrics! I think I have a fat quarter of each of those fabrics, too. I'm going to have to make that!! I already have the book, so please don't enter me in the giveaway.
May 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSonya
I seem to be a non-labeled. But that could be remedied if I'd just totally FINISH a number of projects. Your label ideas, especially the embroidered ones, inspire me. Do here's to at least 9 finishes over summer and labels to celebrate! Thanks for a chance in your giveaway!

I'm a labeler and love to print out labels on my Bernina....but don't worry, I'm an embroiderer also !
