she's not me ... and that's a good thing

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians!  I've got store-bought pumpkin pie defrosting in the fridge and I'm sure my mother-in-law is whipping up the most delicious turkey with all the best homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatos ... ... ... .  I've already planned my outfit for tomorrow's feast.  It includes a black jersey dress with no waistband or buttons or zippers.  It's pretty much pajamas disguised as something appropriate for a holiday family gathering. I will throw on a nice cardigan and maybe a necklace to fool everyone.  ;)

Ok.  Sigh.  I have no time or inclination for large sewing projects these days.  So on weekends such as these, I try to start and finish something that is quick, fun, and creative.  I managed to accomplish that already and it's only dinner time on Saturday!  Woohoo!

I hope you aren't tired of my little coin purses.  I got five kits (if you're paying attention, you'll know this is the third) from Zakka Workshop and of course my daughters asked if I might one for each of them.  They've been sitting on my desk here, waiting patiently to be made.  I had so much fun with the pumpkin version last week I decided I could manage another one.

However, my 12-year-old has a strong sense of her own style and as a good mom, I need to respect that.  So when I ask her what colours/fabrics she'd like, and she picks two of my favourite polkadots (by Lakehouse Drygoods) that I wouldn't normally pair together, I gotta be ok with that.  And when she won't let me embellish with buttons of bows or lace, I gotta be ok with that too.

So.

This is what she asked me for (I suggested a few different patchwork options and she picked checkerboard, and then I went rogue on her and set it on point, which as it turns out, she is ok with thank goodness) and this is what she got.

And you know ... the more I look at it, the more I like it.  I mean, polka dots - they are just quite simply the happiest of prints, right?  I happen to be a HUGE fan of this shade of green, blue is her favourite colour, and ... it turned out super cute.  Like my 12-year-old.  :) xo k

Polka dots are always wonderful, and, as a fellow Canadian, I agree with your fashion plans for tomorrow's feast.
Thanks for sharing the prettiness!

i like the fbrics and colors your daughter picked. And polka dots are classic and yet modern you can't go wrong with them! Actually I think it's a 'grown-up' purse your daughter will enjoy a long time.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and enjoy your feast (and hey don't feel bad about your dress thing I bought a strechy black dress from H&M about 15 years ago for I don't 5 or 10€ and it still looks great and a lot more then it's actual prize;-)

Cute purse and it is fabulous that the girls get to choose. I am letting my 9 year old pick the fabrics for each block of the Farmer's Wife QAL, within reason so far as what will work (must be quilting cottons and primarily staying with the fabrics I bought for it and leftovers from other projects - no trips to the store). They are not always, or even usually, exactly what I would have chosen but they are all coming out really well and it is "our" project now, not mine, which I love! It is really interesting to see how children view color, scale, and pattern since they are not limited by traditional rules nearly as much as we tend to be. Your daughter has a great eye - I think her combination works beautifully and polka dots always make the world a better place.

Tired of these heaven sent creations? Never! Thank you for keeping up with your blog in spite of a very busy life!! Adore the fabrics you chose and so inspired every day by your blog (I'm the fan that has been reading every day for 11 months)- I only have 2 eenie weenie hours each week to quilt but feel so inspired by all that you share in the wonderful world of quilting. The green against the blue polka dots is the bomb. Very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Well, you might not be making huge projects, but you continue to make gorgeous projects! And your daughter has excellent taste -- her style might be different than yours, but she did pick two favourite fabrics from your stash, so clearly your taste has rubbed off at least a little. Beautiful little purses. Thanks so much for sharing.

Adorable is right! In fact, I find this combo very fresh and modern. This sweet coin catcher will be treasured for a long time, I am sure.
I'm 'still' eating from the bird... but it was soo good! BTW, for the firsty time ever, I dressed down in yoga-ish wear. I promise you I was the most comfortable person there!

Not easy to find time when you work - I love your smaller projects and the coin purses are all cute! How difficult are they to make?? Can you tell us? They seem like they would not be easy to make... I am not the best sewer especially with directions! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Comfy clothes are a must!
