belated valentine's quilt, and subsequent impromptu peek inside my house (but just a little one so don't expect too much!)

I started this quilt 4 weeks ago.  I made the top in an evening (if you follow me on Instagram, you already knew that) and top-stitched/bound it the following weekend.  I just didn't get around to blogging about it until today, when I found some time to photograph it on my new oh-my-gosh-do-I-ever-love-you-so-much-where-have-you-been-all-my-life sofa. :)

I bought a 1/2 yard of all the pink and red prints from Tanya Whelan's "Petal" collection last year with the plan to make this quilt I found on Pinterest.

I was going to make a big quilt for my bed.  But we recently upgraded to a king bed (husband is rather tall) and I didn't have enough of this fabric for a king quilt.  I was also inspired to make it last month for 2 reasons:  Valentine's Day was coming up and I was in the mood for some seasonal decoration, and my sewing cupboards are so full I figured that if I used up this fabric there would be that much less for me to fold, stack and store.

It's been ages since I made a simple, just-squares quilt.  I normally prefer smaller-scale prints, but "Petal" has such volumptuous prints that they beg for larger cuts to show themselves off.  I love this quilt.  It's the perfect sofa size and it's just the right amount of colour.  I wish I'd had enough left over to make little cushions for the gray chairs that flank the fireplace, but life will just have to go on without them. :)

Anyhow, while I was taking pictures of the quilt, I took a few more of the main floor of our house.  I know, I promised to show you all of the house and I still will!  It's just still not quite finished and furnished the way I want it.  (Still cardboard in the windows that require privacy, I'm embarrassed to admit.  The irony of someone who has a ton of fabric and no curtains is not lost on me, I assure you.)  But we're getting close ...

Our old dining set was a cute antique set.  And by cute I mean built for little people.  Not my tall husband.  He always looked so awkward on the little chair and lower than average table.  No one was ever really comfortable sitting there - except maybe the kids when they were smaller - and we NEVER lingered after dinner.  But our new dining set makes me deliriously happy.  We love hanging out there now.  It's beautiful, comfortable ... makes me feel like a grown up.  Between the dining set and the stately, traditional, tufted sofa, the style of the entire main floor has been elevated.  Plus I've wanted that oval/X-back chair for decades.  I'm not kidding.  I almost called this blog post, "I'm Bringing Ex-y Back"!  LOL!

Before you chide me for choosing a light upholstery for dining chairs, let me explain a few things:  I used microfiber, had them protected, got the extended warranty, and have emphatically threatened eternal dishwashing duty to anyone who dares to stain them.  So far, so good.

Ok.  Time to prep for the Oscars!  (And by prep I mean get into my favourite pjs, open the jumbo pack of Twizzlers - the red ones, of course - dump some chips in a bowl and claim the best spot on the sofa. :)

Love the tile on the fireplace. Cute, cute quilt. Totally read my mind on the white dining seat, but relieved you completely thought it all through :) You absolutely should have titled this "I'm bringing Ex-y back!" Ha, ha!! Honestly, it's been so long that I've commented on a blog post. I am so used to being on Instagram. I'm missing my funny emojis. Have to rely on old school colons and brackets. Ha!

Your home is so lovely! And you are so talented. I enjoyed reading your "about me" page and your education and job journey. I too enjoyed technical work, pulling things together and organizing, now retired. Thank you for sharing and your lovely blog.

I'm guessing the squares are 6"-7"? I use simple patchwork to make pillowcases for my daughter, as she sleeps with a 36" square pillow. The first one I made used totally random pieces of fabric (now I can't say I don't know how to do random anymore!) but now I bought 4" and 10" pieces of coordinating fabric, which I am about to join together for her new pillowcase. It's all a long process for me (no space), but I'm sure it will be worth it!
I love your blog!! X

Love the quilt. Now I think I need to go buy some more of that fabric. Your home looks beautiful, can't wait to see more. I bought the Rachel Ashwell table and the Darcy chairs with the white linen slipcover seats and have 3 boys. I know my husband thought I was crazy to have this in the dining area in the kitchen. They have been no problem now even close to 5 years later. If anything even hot sauce of mustard gets on the slipcover you can take them off use whatever stain removal and not have to worry about the color fading. Love white furniture.

Pretty.
I love the quilt, and your house is beautiful
I know new furniture is always an exciting endeavor. No worries about spilling.
I have light pink damask covers on my dining chairs, and a wing chair in the living room that is champagne white.
Both have been treated by the company, but I have also treated them with scotch guard every year. Just a light spray.
I have had every thing spilled on these pieces of furniture, the worst was kitty barf on the white wing chair (which has those tufts in the front). That cleaned up very easily even though I did not notice it until later in the day. also, when my Lizzie was 6 years old, she threw up on the dining chair. That cleaned up fine too.
I have learned to buy what I truly want. I have had many say to me as well, "OH NO why did you choose white?" I purchases the dining room chairs and my living room set 30 years ago. That is ages... Both styles are class traditional. I love them.
Your new place looks wonderful. Wood is great. we have a lot of wood on our floors too. Carpet is gross haha

Seeing the comments regarding white chairs, I had to chime in. In the years of raising our daughters, we had large white sectionals for years. The surprise was that the sectionals never got stains from the girls. But when having a dinner or party, the adults always spilled something! Yes, the adults!

You have the very prettiest eye candy on the whole World Wide Web! I LOVE patchwork quilts, esp. soft and beautiful ones like yours. It is just beautiful. Yay for making house progress! It seems like a never-ending project to me. We still have so much we want to build, decorate, etc. in our home after moving here a year and a half ago! *hugs* :)

Very pretty! I don't know which impresses me more: the quilt or the fact that your husband is OK with having a pink quilt on your bed. I am so jealous!

Oh, I'm in love! The quilt is delicious with those lovely florals, dots and all. The colours are so inviting! Your new sofa is, in a word, divine. I swooned over those gorgeous tufts. Probably my favourite aspect of a sofa, you see. Actually, something that elegant is usually called a chesterfield, I'm told.
Your house is really taking on your warm and wonderful taste ( no surprise!) and I, too hope you won't mind sharing all the queries regarding your sofa as well as the wall colour (love!)
Thanks for sharing!

I am currently addicted to HGTV and ALL the remodel, fixer upper house shows. Yea, your house looks like one of the "reveal" houses. Stunning, Well done, Can't wait to see the rest!! I love the rivets (?) tacks(?) on the sofa and the legs oh my! and of course X and oval chairs certainly caught my attention. If it were totally up to me and life wasn't so "daily" my house would look so different. :)

I just reread this post about the sweet pink belated Valentine’s quilt you posted about on 2/22/2015.
What size were your squares? It is the perfect way to use up some of the pink scraps I have from sewing for granddaughters!
