other summer sewing

I wasn't the only one busy sewing in my house this summer.  I managed to talk my 12 year old into making herself a bag for her music books.

I'd found these little 2.5" charm packs of California Girl in my stash and she loved them.

We had a great time coming up with a cute design together.  I thoroughly enjoyed her ideas and self expression.  And just like her mama, she is very clear about what she likes and doesn't like.

(So much fun watching your children evolve!)

Having lots of supplies on hand - like ricrac and embroidery floss - makes projects like these a lot of fun.  Rather than going to the store, we played around with things found in my cupboard and figured out ways of using them to make something she really liked.  There was a lot of, "What about this?", "Do you like these?", and "How about that?  Do you like that?" going on.  Craft play at it's best.

In my completely impartial and unbiased opinion, I think she's done an excellent job with her very first machine-piecing/top stitching job.  She did 100% of the machine work.  I only helped with the rotary cutting parts.

Laying out all those squares on point - and then sewing them together in diagonal rows - posed quite the challenge for her.  She's dyslexic and such a mental exercise as that proved ... interesting.  But the girl persevered and is quite proud of herself.

The bag is almost done.

She just has to make the handles, zip up the sides and add the lining.

Hopefully this weekend!

Just lovely! It's wonderful that she's following in your footsteps! My daughter called the other day and asked what my "quilting schedule" was like and could I make a baby quilt for her friend. I suggested that she could shop my stash and make something and she said, "Mom, we've been through this before. I CAN'T SEW!!!" She'll be by this weekend, so we'll see!

Beautiful~! What a good job she did matching up all the seams, and the quilting is great, too. I love the California Girl fabrics, they're so fresh. I hope you'll post pictures of the finished bag.

So great that you're passing on your love of craft -- and clearly, also your talent for choosing colours, creativity, good taste, and a job well done!

Great sewing!!! My 12 year old granddaughter is sewing with me your daughters project is quite lovely what memories you are making
And yipee for me my S is For Stitch book just arrived and it has more than I expected and is a bigger book than I thought it would be. Also so cool to have boy and girl alphabets just one tiny thing I wish there were an E for elephant as for my 1 1/2 and 3 year old grands it is a favorite animal.... just saying.... Now I do know there must have been so many things you would have and wanted to have in the book but of course you must be limited by how many pages and all the costs.
In the end I love the book and what you have in it is great and just leaves me wanting more......like a great meal.....can't wait for the next one!!

She's a rock star! Her work is sheer perfection - I can't even get my points 'en pointe'.
We're all anxious to see the finished product and perhaps she can treat us to an occasional tutorial as I can only hope more of her creations are in the works.
I am certain Mom is bustin' proud, but I bet Daughter sure is, too ;)
